Each backpack combines three waste streams: flour sacks pulled from local bakeries, seatbelts pulled from junkyards, and deadstock upholstery fabric from two brothers who make couches in Tijuana. The bags are sewn at a local factory that has been making heavy-duty bags for the outdoors for years.

Every piece is unique. The materials are whatever was available that week, which means each backpack is a one-off and once a fabric runs out, it doesn't come back. Each one has a laptop sleeve.

The project explores how a bag can become a platform for thinking about 21st-century vernacular craft — local materials, local makers, a regional style worked out across two cities and one border.
